The following are frequently asked questions regarding rocket propellants
and receiving rocket propellant support at KSC and CCAFS.
How do I tell KSC/CCAFS what my propellant
requirements are?
How do I get my propellants delivered to my
doorstep?
What propellants are available from KSC/CCAFS
Controlled Storage Operations?
What kind of containers do the propellants
come in?
Who can I call for help?
What
propellants does the Space Shuttle use?
How do I tell KSC/CCAFS what my propellant requirements are?
First, you must submit a Forecast:
- NASA customers use NASA form 558.
- DOD & Commercial customers use DESC form 858.
Next, submit a Program Requirements Document (PRD) which specifies propellant
type, quantity, quality, sampling, and container requirements. NASA programs
will use data in their Launch Site Support Plans to write their PRD.
Liquid Propellants and Fluids Management can assist you in defining your
PRD requirements.
If using Controlled Storage-provided propellants, customer must establish
a Customer Identification Code (CIC) with Defense Energy Support Center
(DESC):
- A CIC# is like a "checking account" which will pay for
the propellants issued by KSC/CCAFS Controlled Storage
- NASA customers can use KSC CIC#. Contact PLS or your Launch Site
Support Manager for details.

How do I get my propellants delivered to my doorstep?
Plan ahead:
- For hypergolic propellants, give 30-day notice to JBOSC Fluids Management
(321-867-5710) so that specific containers can be assigned to your
program.
- For other propellants, give 7-10 days notice to JBOSC Fluids Management
(321-867-5710).
- Shorter turnarounds are possible. Plan ahead and avoid potential
program delays. Order early, not late.
You call, we haul:
- Call at least three business days before you need it.
- KSC customers call the JBOSC Duty Office (321-861-5050).
- CCAFS customers call Cape Support office (321-853-5211).
- Your container(s) will arrive at your facility when requested.
- Container(s) are retrieved when requested via the appropriate Duty
Office.
- For NASA programs, your Launch Site Support Manager can place the
requests.

What kind of containers do the propellants come in?
Hypergolic Propellant Delivery Containers at KSC/CCAFS:
Cryogenic liquefied gases in 4,000-13,000 gallon tankers or small dewars
Pressurant Gases in tube-trailers, k-bottles, and Moveable Storage Units
Others in tankers, drums, cylinders, etc. appropriate for your application
GN2 Pipeline: Many KSC/CCAFS Facilities are provided with GN2 via a
34-mile pipeline.
